Visitation and the funeral service will be held at the Caughman- Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, as follows: visitation from 5:00 pm Saturday, October 12, 2019; funeral service starts at 3:00 pm Sunday, October 13, 2019. Burial service will follow the funeral, with words from friends and family, at Woodridge Cemetery.
Derek met the love of his life, Ruth Hunt Payne, nine years ago and they were married August 18, 2018. Their symbol of love was the infinity symbol because they loved each other to infinity and beyond.
Derek was born in Swainsboro, GA on December 18, 1964. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Hunt Payne; grandmother, Laura Bellflower; his grandfather, Robert Earl Underwood, and his uncle, Johnny Underwood. He leaves behind his mother, Florence Lawson; two sisters, Kathy Holt and Carrie Jean, wife to Alan Miller; two brothers, Randall Payne and Aaron, husband to Katherine Payne; two stepsons, Joshua Taylor and Christopher Taylor, many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, step grandchildren and dear friends who loved him very much.
Derek was the owner of Payne Trucking and was an owner-operator and truck driver since he was 19 years old. He was involved in an old car club, a motorcycle club, a bowling team, dirt bike racing, and drag car racing. He was a Christian man who made his church family the Lexington Church of God and believed, with all of his heart, in living life fully, loving people with your whole heart, serving others, and was never opposed to a great laugh and playful pranks.
