She was born on March 18, 1928 in the Britton Lane Community of Madison County to the late Neely Taylor and Lessie Mae Tims Collins. She was a longtime employee for Oakley's Fashions and Nando Jones Dry Goods. She was an active member of Maple Springs Baptist Church.
Bernice always put others first and would always, no matter who you are, would feed you. She would never let anyone go hungry. She would give of herself sacrificially without thinking of herself. She was a servant and example of all to strive to be. She loved working in her garden and tending to her flowers. She loved country music, especially George Jones.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Leon Owens; and her brother, Neely Bruce Collins.
She is survived by her son, Larry Owens and "daughter" in law, Shirley of Denmark; grandson, Brian Owens (Jennifer) of Bells; two sisters, Amy Hughey (Wayne) of Memphis and Samantha Hardee (Gene, deceased) of Jackson; brother, Jessie Collins (Gloria) of Jackson; and several special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Monday, October 14, 2019 from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2019 at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Rev. Ron Hale and Rev. Mark Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Springs Cemetery.
