Frank Howard Smalley, Jr. – 86, of Sun City Center, FL, died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 5, 2019 with his wife Roxy by his side. Born July 10, 1933 in Malden, MA, the son of Frank H. and May (Livingstone) Smalley.
Survived by his wife Roxanna Smalley of Sun City Center, FL, his son Frank H. Smalley, III and wife Cheri of Halifax, two daughters Daryl MacKenzie and husband Jack of Norwell and Lynn Tripp and her partner Jack Colameco of Plymouth. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Erika Kennedy, John MacKenzie, Nicole Murphy, Alex Morse, Gregory MacKenzie, Lisa Rakip and Olivia Brent; seven great grandchildren and his sister Joan Barron of Rockport. Frank was predeceased by his wife of 27 years Diane DesJardins Smalley, his grandson Matthew Christopher Smalley and his brother Ken Smalley.
As a young boy, Frank was an avid horse lover and talked his mother into letting him quit school at 16 to go work on Sir Echo Farm in Millis, MA where he cleaned the stables and groomed the horses. At Sir Echo Farms, he learned to drive an 18-wheel horse trailer at just 17 years old, which led to his life-long career of driving trucks for Anchor Motor Freight. He worked for Anchor Motor Freight for more than 35 years driving a car carrier for General Motors.
Frank and his wife Diane spent many weekends developing his photography business and he became a well-respected, sought-after wedding photographer on the South Shore. He was also the photographer for the Shriners and for the Imperials Drum and Bugle Corp in Pembroke.
He was a member of the Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington and the Masons’ Phoenix Lodge in Hanover; philanthropical organizations supporting charitable institutes such as the Shriners’ Hospitals for Children.
Frank loved his family and spent many summers vacationing on Newfound Lake , where he spent endless hours teaching even the tiniest of his children how to water ski. In the winter, they’d travel to Jackson, New Hampshire and ski Black Mountain for winter school break. He loved to travel, take walks, dance and sing old 50’s tunes around the house. His wife Diane died in 1982 and his family is grateful that he met Roxy. They were able to build a wonderful life together in Sun City Center, Florida for the past 14 years.
Visitation will take place at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate, MA on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 from 4-7 PM. Funeral Home service on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 11 AM followed by interment at Washington Street Cemetery in Norwell. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
