Viki M. Voss (née Interligi), formerly of Brooklyn, NY, but more recently of Stroudsburg, PA, died of complications related to her 11 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease on October 17, 2019. She was 84 years old.
The youngest of three children, Ms. Voss was born in Manhattan on December 13, 1934, to Michael Interligi and Jennie (Almirante) Interligi. She grew up in New York City, attending Washington Irving High School in Gramercy Park, later graduating from Hunter College with a degree in Communications, after having initially started as a biology pre-med. Ms. Voss spent several years as a professional singer, having released one album (arranged by composer Nelson Riddle), before choosing to enter the US Army as a Second Lieutenant, rising to the rank of Captain in 2 years. It was during her time in the Army that she met and married her husband James W. Voss, whom she would later divorce. Ms. Voss chose to resign her commission after the birth of her only child. After the Army, she briefly worked as a teacher, before eventually going to work for the New York State Department of Labor. In the 1990s, she appeared on several local NYC area radio stations as the voice of the DOL’s “Job Service on the Air” program. Ms. Voss was very involved in veterans’ issues, serving as the downstate representative for Veterans’ Affairs for the NY State Employees Federation, and the statewide representative for women from New York for the national Vietnam Veterans Association (VVA). Throughout her life, she was very close with her older sister, Gina Interligi, until her sister’s passing in 1994. In 2001, after nearly 30 years with the state of New York, Ms. Voss retired. Sadly, in early 2008, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It was at that point that she moved to a care facility in northeast Pennsylvania to be closer to her son and his family.
Ms. Voss is survived by her son, Michael Gordon Voss, and her son-in-law David Dobkin, both formerly of East Stroudsbug, but now residing in Mountain View, CA. Remembrance Services will be planned for NY and CA next spring, at which time, her ashes will be interred at St. John Cemetery in Middle Village, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations on her behalf to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, AMVETS National Service Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Additionally, Mr. Voss would like to give special thanks to the owners and staff of Gluco Lodge Personal Care Home in Stroudsburg, PA, for their many years of loving care and support of his mother.
