Carl Vane Hawker was born August 1, 1930 in Brahn, West Coast Berbice, Guyana, to Charles R.V. Hawker and Maud (Marblestein) Hawker. He passed away peacefully on October 22, 2019 at the Focus Care Nursing Home, Houston, Texas. He was 89 years old.
As a young man, Carl moved to England in the early 1950’s to work as a carpenter. He married Anny Johanne Mauser in London on November 14, 1953. Attending night school, he earned a technical degree in construction. They had two children, Mark Vane and Jennie Ann Hawker. Carl moved his family to Guyana in 1969 and then to New York in 1970. After Mark and Jennie left for college, he and Anny resettled in Houston, Texas.
As a Construction Superintendent, Carl worked on construction projects around the world, including the Dungeness B Power Station in Scotland and the Royal Ascot Race Track in England, where he was privileged to meet HRH Queen Elizabeth II. In Texas, he worked on the Adams Marks Hotel, now known as the Marriott Westchase and the STP Nuclear Power Plant in Bay City. In New York, Chicago and Georgetown, Guyana he worked on a variety of office buildings and hotels.
Carl had a passion for deep sea fishing and golf. Later in life, he discovered the joys of ocean cruising. He and his family set sail almost 40 times, visiting locations such as Alaska, Russia, the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, Hawaii, and the Caribbean.
Carl and his wife were devoted Jehovah’s Witnesses. They spent many hours preaching God’s word from door-to-door. Carl also served as his church Administrator for many years.
He is survived by his two children, Mark and Jennie, his Daughter-in-Law, Deborah Wiley Hawker, and his two grandsons, Nicholas Vane Hawker and Jeffrey Adam Marshall of Sugar Land, Texas. He is also survived by his brother, and his wife, Derrick and Eileen Pieters of Edmonton, Canada, and his sister, Brenda Brown of Brooklyn, New York, and his nephew, and his wife, Robert and Pam Johnson of Silver Springs, Maryland, and numerous relatives living in the United States, Guyana, Canada, and Denmark.
Carl is predeceased by Anny, his wife of 51 years (2004); grandson, Alexander Christopher Marshall (2016); sister, Florence Harding (1998).
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 9th, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 19220 Beechnut, Richmond, Texas 77407.
