Born in Busan, Korea on August 22, 1937, he attended Seoul National University, receiving his medical school degree in 1962. He and Jae Ok Ro were married in 1965 in Baltimore where he completed the residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at Union Memorial Hospital. Hong subsequently completed another residency in anesthesiology at Columbia University.
With two young children in tow, they settled in Syracuse, New York, where Hong practiced at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital, serving as chief of anesthesiology and as a board member for the Professional Medical Conduct Board for the N.Y. State Department of Health and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He spent his retirement years living in St Petersburg, Florida and Greenwich, Connecticut close to family.
He is survived by his wife Jae Ok, daughter Jenny (David) Lee, son Albert (Anita) Yoon, and four grandchildren (Isabel, Juliana, Akash, and Jaya), brother Sun Hong Yoon, step-mother Sang Soon Yoon, and half-brother Jim Hong Yoon.
The funeral service will take place at 10am on Monday Oct 28, 2019 at St Catherine of Siena in Riverside, Greenwich. Donations in memory of Hong Yoon can be sent to the Lustgarten Foundation to support pancreatic cancer research.
