Richard Lee Mutschler, 84, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. Born on October 31, 1935 in Sunbury, PA; he was the son of the late Carl H. Mutschler and Mildred Fenstmacher Mutschler. After his high school graduation, Richard enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Corporal. He married the late Marie H. Mutschler and together they had two children. Following his honorable discharge, Richard began his maintenance career, working for the City of Raleigh - Housing Authority, NC State Prison System, the Judicial Building in Downtown Raleigh and Raleigh City Parks and Rec.
After the passing of his wife, Marie in 2002 and his son, David James Mutschler in 2006, Richard found his ray of sunshine - Shirley M. Schmidt. They met online and almost missed out on each other when they both went to different restaurants for their "first date". Things worked out better on their second attempt and they have been together ever since - marrying in 2012. Shirley brought out his adventurous side - except when it came to food. He loved traveling, swimming, boating, tubing, camping, cooking on grill, playing cards - Rummikub, puzzles and his annual Halloween Birthday parties.
Richard could fix anything and was very generous with his time and resources. He enjoyed everyone he met and especially loved the new additions in family members after marrying Shirley. He is survived by his daughter: Sandra Leigh Mutschler, of Fuquay-Varina; step-children: Susan Rosero (Daniel), of Raleigh, Mary Rajewski (Norman), of Cheney, KS, Mark Schmidt (Anne), of Edmond, OK and Marty Schmidt (DaLyn), of Deerfield, MO; ten grandchildren: Dalton Schmidt (Christie), Clara Schmidt, Haley Schmidt, Malaki Schmidt, Gabe Schmidt, Kayla Rosero, Ethan Rosero, Nathan Rajewski, William Rajewski and Jon Rajewski; great-grandchild: Brayden Rosero; sister-in-law: Ginny Mutschler, of PA and FL; and many friends, including neighbors he has known for years.
Richard was preceded in death by his first wife; by his son; and siblings: William I. Mutschler, Edward Mutschler (the late Sharon) and Janet J. Lynch (the late Jim).
Family will receive friends on Saturday, November 9th from 10-11 am at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue). A Service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 am, with a reception to follow.
Richard was known for giving to numerous organizations including the WCPE Radio Station, the Kidney Foundation and various cancer funds. In lieu of flowers, please give to a charity of your choice in memory of Richard.
