Peter was born October 28, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York to Leon and Beatrice Kaufman. He graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1968, and obtained his juris doctorate from the University of California Los Angeles in 1971. Before working as an attorney, Peter spent time traveling the world, and worked for several years on a kibbutzim in Israel. After returning home, he began his career with the California Attorney General's Office, where he practiced law for nearly fifty years. He relocated to San Diego in the 1980s, and on February 21, 1993 he married the former Linda Bartholomew at the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla, CA. Peter began working as a retired annuitant in 2011, and spent the last years of his life enjoying hobbies such as biking, reading, and afternoon lunch discussions with friends. He was an avid boater and enjoyed taking his family out sailing on the bay and Pacific Ocean. He loved spending time with his dog, Baylor, who will miss his morning and afternoon walks dearly.
Peter is survived by his wife Linda Kaufman, his two daughters Paige and Brooke Kaufman, and his son Ethan Kaufman. He was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Beatrice.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate if donations are made to the Jewish National Fund or the YMCA Foundation, whose La Jolla staff gave Peter’s family sixteen more wonderful months with him.
