Joselyn Gonzalez was born on March 20, 2001 in Cadereyta de Montes, Queretaro, Mexico. She passed away on November 16, 2019, at the age of 18, at the Medical University of South Carolina. She lived on campus at USC Beaufort at the time of her passing.
Joselyn was a bright and intelligent girl who was beloved by her friends and family. She was a joy to be around and never met a stranger. According to one of her teachers, the only thing bigger than her smile was her future. She was a dedicated student of Lexington School District One and graduated in the top 10% of her class from Gilbert High School in June 2019. In her time at GHS, she competed in soccer and cross-country as a member of her high school’s teams.
Joselyn was nearing the end of her first semester at USC Beaufort, where she was studying engineering in hopes of being an architect. Joselyn was a faithful member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia. She served the Catholic Church as a radio host on Revive.fm, a statewide, Spanish-language radio station broadcasted by the Diocese of Charleston.
Joselyn leaves behind a loving family, including her mother, Norma Gonzalez; father, Roberto Gonzalez; younger sister, Valerie Gonzalez; older sister, Brenda Gonzalez de Esquivel; brother-in-law, Israel, and nephew, Franco. She is grieved by her maternal grandparents, Augustina Martinez Angeles and the late Victor Gonzalez, and her paternal grandparents, Hilda Gonzalez Torres and Aurelio Vidal Gonzalez. The love of the Gonzalez Mata family and the Martinez Angeles family is with her as well. She also leaves behind her loving boyfriend, Kevin Alvarez and her devoted church family.
The Rosary will be held on Monday, November 25, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia, SC. Joselyn’s funeral service will proceed on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church. The funeral will be directly followed by the burial ceremony in the Lexington Memorial Cemetery.
