Betty Emmett was born March 1st, 1935 in Mayetta Kansas to Christopher and Cordelia Emmett. She was the second of six children, raised on and around the Kickapoo reservation in North Eastern Kansas. The family was poor and times were hard, but Betty was raised in a family with a lot of love. She attended Haskell Indian College in Lawrence and worked in the Bendix plant in Kansas City, MO.
In December of 1961, she married Don Knarr of West Virginia. He was in the Army and stationed in Kansas. In 1966 the couple received their only child, Adam.
Betty traveled the world as Don was sent to put up satellite antennas in the 1970s. The girl from the Kickapoo Indian Reservation saw the wonders of Ethiopia, Italy, Greece, and other exotic locales.
Moving back to the states, the family settled in South Dakota, where Don worked as a recruiter for the Army, and Betty worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. After raising their son in South Dakota, Betty and Don moved and retired to Leavenworth Kansas to be nearer to family. After 30 years in Leavenworth, Don passed away and Betty moved to Greenwood Terrace in Lenexa Kansas.
Even though mom was not a great cook, she managed to fill the home with love, laughter and affection. Betty was a people person in that she could make friends anywhere, with anyone.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Don, her parents, her sister Christine, her brother Larry, and most recently her nephew Leroy Barnes.
She is survived by her son Adam (James) of Kansas City, MO; sisters, Maryann (Tom), and Sandy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a private wake at the family home and eventual inurnment, with Don, at Shipshe Cemetery on the Pottawatomie Reservation, next to her parents.
