October 23rd 1930 – November 26th 2019
Born in Germany, he was the son of Elisabeth Muller and Adolf Gentemann and the youngest of two children.
The family had a flour and a saw mill in the Landestrau region until World War two. In 1945, his family fled to Berlin as Russian troops were approaching.
Once in West Berlin they were free and settled in Russelsheim, a small city near Frankfurt.
In 1954, Waldemar emigrated to Canada with the intention of going to Winnipeg where he had heard it was possible to work in flour mills. However, once in Montreal, the Five Roses sign at the port caught his attention and he started working there. He quickly became a sub-contractor who would pick up the torn bags of flour from Five Roses and sell them to pig farmers in the Eastern Townships.
He held various jobs and subleased rooms in his big apartment to other German immigrants who had just arrived by boat to Montreal.
He planned to eventually go back to Germany but decided to stay in Montreal instead moving on to becoming a budgie bird broker while studying business. He married Katherina Paulsen in 1957 and had 2 children, Rainer and Diana.
In 1964, with a small down payment, he bought land to develop in Sainte-Agathe South. He constructed roads, sewer and water systems and with a series of additional land purchases, he created a Swiss and Bavarian style chalet development he named Domaine Chanteclair Estates, which today is spread out over two mountains and 500 acres of land with over 400 chalets.
As an extension to this development, in 1978 he built a factory to construct pre-fabricated homes called Chalet Technique mostly to meet the rising demand of Europeans who bought chalets as rental properties. Combined with the chalets he built for himself, Chalets Chanteclair at one point had over 60 chalets for rent on a short term basis.
Waldemar’s son eventually took over this company and in 2005 Waldemar created a new entity with his daughter Diana called Chalets Lac à la Truite.
On November 30, four days after his death, Waldemar’s wife Katherina Gentemann (born Paulsen) also passed away. Waldemar and Katherina Gentemann had a real love affair for 62 years and were inseparable even at death. They are survived by their children Rainer and Diana and their grandchildren Lukas and Gabrielius.
The family thanks all the personnel at the Centre Hospitalier de Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts. Donations can be made to the Fondation Médicale des Laurentides.
