Linda was born to Edgar and Estelle Moore in Roxboro, NC, on April 18, 1945. She graduated from Roxboro High School and met the love of her life, Jim Shotwell, in the summer of 1964, and they were married and became parents to their loving daughters, Elizabeth and Beverly. Linda went on to receive her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Carolina University.
After working thirty years as a math and science teacher at Murfreesboro Middle School and a Principal at Ahoskie Middle School, she retired from Hertford County Schools. She knew every one of her students, loved them all and never forgot a single one. Linda was always an educator, not just to her students, but to her family and friends, and she had a particular fondness for North Carolina history. Linda was an active leader in her community with organizations including the Jaycettes, the Murfreesboro Historical Association, the Murfreesboro Woman’s Club, and Saint Thomas Episcopal Church.
Linda was a loving daughter, wife, mom, grandma, teacher and friend. Upon her retirement, she took on her favorite job, full-time Grandma. She even began to introduce herself to others by simply saying “I’m Grandma!”
Linda’s love for her family was like no other, and everything she did, she did for her family. She so loved spending time at the beach every year with them. She was a hardcore NC State Wolfpack fan, tailgating and cheering at the football and basketball games with Jim, her children and grandchildren. Linda made everyone laugh with the silliest of things she would say.
In addition to her parents, Linda was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jenna Sanders.
Linda is survived by her loving husband of fifty-two years, Jim Shotwell; her daughters Elizabeth Sanders of Clayton, and Beverly Rogers of Apex; her sons-in-law Todd Sanders and Pat Rogers; her grandchildren Emily and Caroline Sanders, and Gentry and Patrick Rogers; and the many, many students she taught and loved.
A celebration of Linda’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at Meherrin Baptist Church at 519 Meherrin Lane, Murfreesboro, NC. The family will receive guests immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Linda’s honor may be made to the Hertford County High School Allen-Murray Scholarship or the Meherrin Baptist Youth Mission Fund.
