Irene was born in Tacoma, Washington to Frank and Josephine Luca on April 17, 1919. She was the youngest of five children. Her siblings Emma, Anthony, Clorinda, and Della have preceded Irene in death.
Irene grew up to be a beautiful young woman. Upon graduating high school she entered nursing school at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. During this time she met and married a handsome young man named Donald Johnston on June 11th, 1942. Soon after they married, Don left to join the war. He was gone for one year. After his return, they both worked in a grocery store in South Tacoma. Little did Irene know that another store was in her future, one that they owned and managed, called Johnston's Seafood in Bellevue, Washington.
Irene and Don adopted two children: Michael Maurice Johnston and Deborah Ann Johnston Blair.
Irene has six grandchildren: Sarah, Aaron, & Grace (from Debbie & Russell Blair), and Michael, Carl, & Natalie (from Michael & Susan Johnston). She also has five great-grandchildren: Mireya, Jabin, & Marisa Ross, and Roslyn, & Dashel Johnston.
She was a beautiful, strong, hardworking woman who had a wonderful sense of humor, strong opinions, a generous heart, and loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren tremendously.
Irene joins in heaven her husband Donald, son Michael, her sisters Emma, Clorinda, and Della and her brother Anthony, and her parents Frank and Josephine.
