She was born on October 17, 1927, in Springfield, Illinois, the
daughter of the late Anton Michael Proves and Laurrena Mildred DeLoneno Proves. She married Edward Gerald Charlton on October 3, 1953, in Springfield, and he preceded her in death on May 7, 2000.
Survivors include daughter, Marie (Robert) Rudin, of Springfield; son Robert (Barbara) Charlton of Petersburg; daughters, Gerri Ripka, of Springfield, Becky Smith (Mike Vonnahmen), of Springfield and Florida; and Kristi (Nils) Lahr, of North Bend, Washington; one brother, Anton (Gloria) Proves, of Springfield; fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, seventeen great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, parents, and two sisters, Theresa L. Schoby and Margarite S. Ginder, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Charlton lived most of her life in Springfield, Illinois, and retired from the Chatham school district. She was a member of the South Side Christian Church. She loved and was proud of her big family. She had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She loved dancing, especially polka, and attended community dances with her friends through her eighties.
Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield where visitation will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020 from 9:30 am until time of the funeral service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield.
