Jo Alice Kelly was born on December 8, 1926 to Joseph and Jesse Coody near Tulsa, OK. She was named after the Dr. who delivered her, Joe, and the nurse who assisted, Alice. Jo Alice lost her mother to tuberculosis at 6 months old and was raised by her paternal grandmother in Chicago, IL, while her 2 year old sister, Marge, was raised by her paternal Aunt and Uncle in Phoenix, AZ. They kept in touch after meeting for the first time at 10 and 12 years old.
Years later when Marge found out that one of her friends, Robert Kelly was going to be stationed at Navy Pier in Chicago, IL, she suggested that he look up her little sister. Robert and Jo Alice were married two years later. Together they built a home and raised 4 children.
Our Mom. Our mom enjoyed several crafts including Artex paints in which she painted on dresser scarves and pillow cases. She crocheted several blankets and sweaters. She canned plum and apricot jelly from the fruit trees that grew in our back yard. She had a talent for sewing and sewed school clothes, graduation, prom and wedding dresses, and let’s not forget the matching Easter dresses that were very pretty, but scratchy.
She was an active member of her church and taught Sunday School for many years. She saw to it that all of us kids attended church and she gave us a Christian upbringing. Grace was said every night at the dinner table.
She always kissed us goodbye before we went to school and goodnight when we went to bed.
Mom was always there to help us when we needed it.
She made the best homemade noodles and chocolate pie. She made holidays very special with all of her cooking and backing. She was very giving and sweet and always a lady.
We will carry her in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
We love you Mom.
