Dr. John R. Cranton, 83, passed away peacefully at Saad Hospice Facility on February 2, 2020. John was born on June 6, 1936 in Birmingham, England. He immigrated to the United States in 1949 and became a United States citizen in 1953. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1952 and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. in 1957. He also earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Alabama, Birmingham, Alabama in 1961 and did his internship from 1961-1962 at the United States Air Force Hospital, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. His first duty assignment was at the 839th Tactical Hospital, Sewart Air Force Base, Tennessee in 1962 as a Flight Medical Officer and in 1964 he became a Flight Surgeon. Dr. Cranton was released from active duty in June 1965 and he did his residency in General Psychiatry at the University of Alabama Medical College, Birmingham, Alabama from 1965-1968. He served in the Air Force Reserves till he retired as a Chief Flight Surgeon Colonel, MC. June 1996. He specialized in psychiatry and worked in Mobile, Alabama till retiring December of 2019.
John is survived by his loving wife Pat of 22 years; children, Deborah (David) Bates, Pamela Cranton, Kimberly (Tom) Kordell, Christopher (Michelle) Cranton, Gregory Cranton; grandchildren, Erin, Joshua, Andrea', Benjamin, Jacob, Andrew, Jason, Caleb, Bethany, Cameron, Emily, Evan, Caden, Ella and Olivia; great-Daddy John to many. He was predeceased by parents John and Ella Massey.
Services are scheduled to take place at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 1050 Azalea Rd., Mobile Ala 36693, on Saturday, February 8, 2020. A visitation will take place at 12:00pm with a memorial service to follow at 2:00pm. A military honors service will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Pkwy, Mobile, Ala 36605. In lieu of flowers please make any donations to St. Lukes Episcopal Church.
