On Monday, February 3, 2020, Michelina “Maggie” Compagno, a loving mother of 2 sons, 5 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, passed away at the golden age of 96. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Maggie was born on May 19, 1923 in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY to Pietro and Frances Costa. Married to Isadore ”Ciro” Compagno for nearly 50 years, she raised her two sons Joseph and Peter Compagno. And later, helped raise her grandsons Ciro and Anthony. She was truly the family matriarch.
Maggie enjoyed spending much of her time with family, playing cards, cooking and dancing. She was a card shark at gin rummy. She would often be seen singing songs by one of her favorites Frank Sinatra. She liked to collect souvenirs, dolls and delve into the latest clothing fashion. Her most notable doll was Betty Boop. She prided herself on speaking her mind and saying like it is, whether you asked or not. Most times her insight was spot on. She was affectionately called "grandma mafia" due to her outspoken nature. She was truly one of a kind with a huge heart for her family and friends.
Her husband Ciro passed away in 1994.
Visitation will take place at Casey Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place at Church of Our Lady Pity at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who
trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory, forever.
Amen.
