Wilma H. Kirn, 81, formerly of Lee’s Summit, passed away in Rogers, Arkansas on January 28, 2020. Visitation will be on Friday, February 7, 2020 from 6-8pm and Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 8 at 10am, all at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO. Burial will be at Longview Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made to AWLS Educators, 4800 W. Gates Pass Road, Tucson, AZ 85745.
Wilma was born on December 2, 1938 in Rodney, Arkansas to Oma Lee (Sanders) and Henry Alford DeWitt. She graduated from Viola High School in Viola, Arkansas. At age 18, Wilma came to Kansas City to earn money to send back home. It was in Kansas City that she met her first and true love, Don J. Kirn, at Velvet Freeze, an ice cream parlor. They were married on February 10, 1962. They welcomed two children Don J. “Joe” and Lisa. The family enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. She loved to fish as long as someone would bait her hook and take the fish off. Wilma was a conservationist and a lifetime member of Safari Club, Inc. and Sables. Wilma and Don were residents of Lee’s Summit from 1970-2001. They enjoyed travels to Hawaii, Turkey, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Switzerland, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Mexico, Netherlands and many of the states in the U.S. In retirement, they moved to Warsaw, Missouri, and bought an RV Park.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Don J. Kirn; her parents Henry and Oma DeWitt; siblings Thurston DeWitt, Cleates Kruse, Cloris Newman, and Dolly Coonce. Wilma is survived by: son Joe (Cindy) Kirn; daughter Lisa (Jim) Cowart; grandchildren Nicole, D.J., and Ben; and 5 great grandchildren; her siblings Ethel Fann, Frank DeWitt, Larkin DeWitt, Dolores Tate and Judy Dillinger.
