The morning of February 5, 2020, Luis Castellanos passed away peacefully at the age of 92 after an unexpected decline in health. Tio Luis also known as Uncle Lou was surrounded and supported by his loving family and friends during the last days of his life.
He was born to Luis Pastor Castellanos and Maria Hernandez in Tela, Honduras. After the passing of his young mother, his father (who remarried to Elvia Romero) embraced him as part of his extended family of 6 brothers and sisters. In 1959 at age 32, Tio Luis decided to make his way to the United States. He was ambitious and worked tirelessly in his determination to learn English and the American culture. He worked a full-time job at a medical supply company and attended night school. In as little as 4 years, he became a U.S. citizen and accomplished the American dream of purchasing his first home in Lincoln Park. Shortly after his retirement in 1996, he decided to leave the cold winters of Chicago to relocate to Palm Bay, Florida with sister Irma Mejia. After basking in the Floridian sun for two decades, the sunbirds decided to relocate back to Chicago to be near family and loving friends.
Tio Luis always expressed deep gratitude to his nieces, great-nieces and nephew for taking good care of him the last four years of his life: Irma (he affectionately called, Irmita), her husband Aaron Jaramillo, Maria Ramirez along with daughters Katarina and Viviana, nephew Marcus Mejia and Karen Mejia—who cared for him in hospice. Precious memories remain and will be shared by his loving sister Irma Mejia, Castellanos sisters: Luz, Elvia, Crucita and Luisa Pastora (Patty), Castellanos Brothers: Luis Antonio and Guillermo (Mito) along with a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Ricardo Hernandez and brother-in-law Sigfrido (Irma) Mejia.
Tio Luis enjoyed his annual visits to his beloved Honduras and cherished his family and friends. He will be remembered for his bilingual fluency, determination to make a good living, sense of humor, and his extensive vitamin collection. We can never forget—his helping hand and giving heart, jovial laugh and ability to dance like the night would never end. There is no doubt that Tio Luis is dancing and laughing with much joy in heaven; celebrating with the Lord for living a beautiful life!
On behalf of the family, we would like to express our gratitude for your support, strength, love and prayers during this time of bereavement. We will forever be grateful. May the Lord´s blessing be upon you.
