Passed away peacefully on February 4, 2020 in Davenport. Virgil was born October 11, 1929 in Nome, ND to Morris and Ruby Baarstad. He spent his youth in North Dakota and Minnesota. In 1941 their entire family moved across the country to Seattle in order for his father to find work. Virgil graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948 then enlisted in the United States Army. During his three years in the Army, Virgil served in Panama and Fort Hood Texas and was the acting Sergeant Major of the Second Armored Division. Virgil was honorably discharged in 1951 and went on to attend the University of Washington for two years. After college he spent a year in the Merchant Seaman’s Transport Service (MSTS) and made twelve voyages to Japan and back. In the mid 1950’s Virgil began a career in residential construction. He first worked for his father then formed a partnership with his brother Willard. Virgil eventually went out on his own and ran a very successful business until his retirement in 1994. In 1961, Virgil met and married Beverly May in Seattle. They made their home in Shoreline, WA where they lived for 51years before moving to Davenport, WA in 2012 to be closer to their children. Virgil was devout in his faith, and instilled the same in his family. Virgil loved the outdoors and spent many years hunting, fishing and hiking in the mountains. Virgil took great pride in gardening and provided vegetables to many. He loved to travel with his wife and spending time with family and friends. While in Shoreline he was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and then transferred to the Zion Lutheran Church when they moved to Davenport. Virgil is survived by his sister, Aloris Doyle, two sons Eric (Gina) Baarstad and Todd (Jeanne) Baarstad along with seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, his parents and three brothers. A celebration of life wake will be held on Sunday May 17, 2020 from 2-6 pm at 1408 Morgan St.davenport, WA.
