Marcel Dorais est né le 25 juin 1924 à Montréal. Il était l’aîné de cinq enfants. Ses parents Albertine Ladouceur et Honoré Dorais avaient aussi deux autres filles et fils : Pierrette, Ghyslaine, Guy et Raymond.
Il passe son enfance et adolescence à Montréal dans le quartier de Saint- Henri. Issu d’une famille ouvrière très modeste, il s’occupera, dès son adolescence, à plusieurs petits boulots pour amasser quelque argent de poche ce qui lui permettra de payer ses billets de tramway et repas pour fréquenter l’école secondaire de son choix. Élève assidu et très ambitieux, il fréquentera le Collège Mont-St-Louis avant de joindre la Polytechnique de Montréal d’où il graduera comme ingénieur.
Il débute sa carrière d’ingénieur à Québec et joint la firme Jobin Inc. Construction puis Michaud & Simard Inc . Il évoquait d’ailleurs souvent ses réalisations de construction lors des années passées à Québec.
Au début des années soixante, il déménage à Montréal pour y occuper le poste de Vice-Président chez Miron Limitée. Un des contrats de travail se réalisera en Haïti où il fera la rencontre du Père Poulin, missionnaire jésuite. Il y retournera bénévolement pour contribuer aux travaux de la Villa Manrez, Maison internationale pour l’accueil des missionnaires, des coopérants et ONG pour le développement social et spirituel des haïtiens.
Au début des années soixante-dix, il accepte un poste au sein de la compagnie Les mines d’amiante Bell Ltée à Thetford Mines et devient le premier Président Directeur général francophone de cette entreprise, propriété de la firme Turner and Newall Ltée de Manchester en Angleterre. Après quelques années, il occupera le poste de PDG de la Société Asbestos Corporation. Ces responsabilités l’amenèrent à voyager à travers le monde pour développer le marché de l’amiante. Cette période fut remplie de rencontres diplomatiques et professionnelles qui marquèrent sa carrière et définiront son empreinte dans le monde de l’amiante.
Vers les années 82, on assista à la nationalisation de l’amiante par le gouvernement du Québec et ce fut le début de la crise des impacts de l’amiante sur la santé. Il prit sa retraite quelques années après.
La littérature de l’histoire de l’humanité, les revues financières, la photographie et les voyages auront été ses passe-temps favoris. Au fil des ans, il a cumulé moult photos de ses nombreux voyages. Plus jeune, il aurait été un bon danseur. À ses heures, il était aussi philatéliste. Il aimait collectionner certaines œuvres d’art et de collections.
Il aura de son premier mariage trois enfants : Michel, Daniel et Anne. Six petits-enfants (Martin son filleul, Caroline, Jean-François, Louis-Philippe, Charles et Stéfany) et cinq arrière-petits-enfants (Gabriel, Alexis, Marc-Antoine, Julien et Livy) se succéderont.
Des voyages dans les Antilles, en Floride et quelques excursions de pêche seront des souvenirs bien spéciaux pour la famille. Les séjours à sa résidence de Thetford Mines lors des fêtes de Noël et certains week-ends d’été sont aussi des moments privilégiés passés avec lui.
Notre père était un homme de son temps. Les discussions étaient brèves et les émotions rarement dévoilées. Nous savions toutefois que ses trois enfants étaient pour lui son noyau familial. À sa façon, il nous a transmis son amour et l’importance des liens fraternels et filiaux.
Dès les premières années de sa retraite, il passa six mois par année à Mandelieu-la-Napoule puis à Grasse, villes prisées de la Côte d’Azur en France en compagnie de sa deuxième épouse. Il trouvait du plaisir à faire, chaque année, quelques voyages et visites historiques des pays avoisinants aux frontières rapprochées.
Lors de la vente de sa résidence en France, il devint plus sédentaire à son condo de l’île des sœurs à Montréal.
Il appréciait la bonne chère et le « dry martini » était son « drink » favori par excellence. Les visites de ses enfants agrémentaient sa vie.
C’était un homme ambitieux et déterminé qui a réussi sa vie professionnelle.
Il était fier de cette réussite et nous le sommes aussi.
Il a vécu une vie à la hauteur de ses aspirations.
Notre père restera dans notre cœur pour toujours.
