Nancy Elder Hermann McAllister passed from this world on February 6, 2020. She was born on October 26, 1936, in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Glen Elder and Evelyn Williams Elder. She lived in El Paso in 1945 on “Officers’ Row” at Fort Bliss where her dad was stationed in the Army. She graduated from high school in Knoxville, TN. She attended college at Indiana University Bloomington and at Texas Western University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1957. She began teaching first grade for the El Paso Independent School District, where she was a career teacher, spending most of her years at Lamar Elementary School. She lived all her adult life in El Paso. She also completed a master’s degree in English literature from UTEP. She did additional graduate studies and taught in the federally funded remedial reading program. She was a gifted artist and an accomplished duplicate bridge player. She had a sardonic wit, which was passed on to her daughters and grandchildren, along with her tacit, though enduring love.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, George McAllister. She is survived by her daughters, Angie Hermann of El Paso and Susan Strelitz of Austin, TX; grandsons Samuel Strelitz Lerma and Joseph Strelitz Lerma, also in Austin; sister Angeline Mason and brother-in-law Harry Mason of Bakersfield, CA. Nancy was also predeceased by her sister Susan Elder Persky. Nancy was a member of the congregation at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in La Union, New Mexico. There will be a memorial service at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at a later date.
