Skip was born on January 2, 1936 in Detroit, MI to Harry E. and Eleanor (Leedham) Mudge.
He received his B. S. degree in Biology from Spring Hill College in Mobile AL, in 1957, and was a textile chemist during his 44-year career. He was awarded nine US Patents in Textile Chemistry.
Skip married his first wife, Ruth Potter, in 1957. They had 4 children: Jennifer, Jeffrey, Scott, and Mary Ruth. At the time of Ruth’s death in 1994 they had been married for 37 years. In 1997, he married his second wife, Jerry Jonas. They were married for 20 years.
Together Skip and Jerry founded Our Children’s Memorial Walkway in Charlotte, which provides hope and solace for grieving parents who have lost children. Through their Footprints Ministry, their programs and lectures reached and helped countless people with substance abuse problems. Skip was very involved in church activities at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte, and for the past 5 years at Bayleaf Baptist in Raleigh.
Skip was a kind Christian gentleman with a great love of family, storytelling, conversations, watching movies on the Hallmark Channels and reading books…. lots of books!
Skip is survived by his daughter, Mary (Craig) Bunzey, son Scott (Deborah) Mudge; stepdaughters Anne (David) York, Emma (Rick) Hoover and Amy Gray; grandson, Aaron Bunzey, step-grandsons Logan York, Richard Jonas, and Ricco Hoover as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Ruth, second wife, Jerry; son, Jeffrey, daughter, Jennifer; brother Hank Mudge, sister Christine Long and step-grandson Matthew Gray.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service with burial to follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.
