Alvertis maternal grandparents, George Reed Johnson and Mary Starling Johnson were influential in his early childhood. After moving to Austin, Texas at the age of six, his mother Susie Spears and devoted stepfather Emmitt Moore Spears Sr, reared him through his formative and teen years.
Alvertis received his education in the Austin Public School District, where he attended Sims and Blackshear Elementary, Kealing Junior High and graduated from the original LC Anderson high school and was quickly drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam Conflict. After being injured during the conflict he received an honorable discharge and was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, the Expert Rifle medal and prestigious Purple Heart Medal.
Al met and married Evelena Deshay in 1970 and to this union three children, Marilyn Denise, Sharon Kay, and Alvertis Record Jr were born.
