Douglas was born in Gary, Indiana on January 25, 1951 to Walter L. & Ruth D. Gorley. He was raised by his parents, along with one sister and one brother. His parents and siblings preceded him in death.
Doug completed the 11th grade, however, quit school after his junior year to join the Marines. He served in the Marines from 3/24/1969 to 10/02/1970 during the Vietnam era as a rifleman. He did experience combat during his tour of duty in Vietnam & then was honorably discharged.
He later received his GED and then took some courses in Turf Management at Purdue University.
After his time in the service, he worked for the B & O Railroad, then as a machinist and later in the Parks Department, until he became disabled in 1989.
Doug was never married, but had nieces and nephews. Unfortunately, he had little contact with them throughout his life.
Doug first came to live in Southern Oregon in 1979. In 1994, he returned to Gary, Indiana to help his aging parents and ended up staying there until 2011. He then returned to the Rogue Valley where he lived the rest of his life in Grants Pass, Oregon.
He will be laid to rest at Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Oregon.
