Adriene R. (Braxton) Jones, 83, of Staten Island, N.Y., passed away on Friday, February 7, 2020, in Virginia Beach, Virginia surrounded by loving family. Born December 14, 1936 in Middlesex, VA. She was the daughter of the late Herman and Vernell (Russ) Braxton.
Adriene, was a retired CNA and Psychiatry/Detox NA at Bailey Seton Hospital (where she worked for 26 years). She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, exercising at the YMCA, traveling locally, cooking, listening to music and dancing. Despite her age, she gave her grandchildren and great grandchildren a challenge on the dance floor 😊. She also enjoyed volunteering at Project Hospitality where she prepped food and served the homeless. In addition, Ms. Jones was a Gospel Wing Covenant partner at the Temple of Restoration Ministry in Brooklyn N.Y. for the past 25 years. Here, she helped spread the gospel and reach the lost through the airwaves. Ms. Jones was well known in her community as someone always willing to extend herself. Her bright spirit, smile, warm gestures, and words of encouragement were welcomed by all.
Adriene, the Matriarch of the family, was the wife of the late Roosevelt Jones. She was also a loving Mother, Grandmother, great Grandmother, and great-great Grandmother. She is survived by 10 children; Ellen Gray, Rosetta Jones, Roosevelt Jones, Donzell Jones, Darlene Davenport, Kim Bullock, Naomi Burrwell, Derrick Jones, Alberto Cornett and Jerome Cornett. She also leaves behind 25 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and two son-in laws (James Burrwell and Bryant Bullock). She is predeceased by her parents, Herman and Vernell Braxton; her sister Viola Poindexter; 3 brothers, Herman Braxton Jr, Corinthian (Bucky) Braxton, Vernon Braxton, and 2 children; Phyllis Darlene Jones and Sparks Jones.
Known as “Ma Jones” to many, she will be remembered as a kind and loving person. A “Selfless” person who consistently extended herself to help others. To her family, she will be remembered affectionately as “Ma,” – She was the cement that bonded her family as one. Adriene, was a Prayer Warrior who will be greatly missed by family and friends near and far.
The family will receive friends from 3:00pm – 8:00 pm on Tuesday February 24, 2020 at Harmon Funeral Home located at 571 Forest Ave, Staten Island N.Y. 10310. Funeral Services will be conducted 10:00am Wednesday February 25, 2020 10:00 am. Interment will take place at the Frederick Douglas Cemetery. Arrangements by Harmon Funeral Home.
