Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Mary was born in Newark, Ohio on March 10th, 1921 to the late Blanch Conger and Bernard Warfel.
She was the next-to-youngest child of one son, George, and three daughters; Betty, Mary, and Darlene (Lala, the youngest).
Mary was married for 56 years to the love of her life, Donald H. Askins, on December 27, 1943.
They remained married until his death on August 23, 1999. He remained the love of her life for the rest of her living years.
After Mary retired from the Newark Police Department, she and Don relocated to Sebastian, FL. in 1982.
Mary was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Sebastian, and a member of the Roseland United Methodist Church.
Mary and Don had two children, Terry and Melanie, 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Mary left behind a journal with her notes scribed inside as to how she wanted her memorial service to be; a ‘Ceremony of Life’ where no one would wear ‘black’, which favorite picture of hers to use, and how she wanted her memorial card to read.
And at the very end of her instructions, she clearly wrote, “I may be dead, but I can still give orders!”
Mom, I hope this service has done your legacy justice!
A Ceremony of Life will take place at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 7th at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin, 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32223.
