It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Wesley Mulley. Wes passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Friday, February 14th, 2020. Wes was born in North Sydney on June 21st, 1935, to the late J.W. and Marion (Harnem) Mulley.
Early in life, Wes worked as an underground supervisor in our local coal mines for 38 years, eventually retiring from the Prince Mine. He was an active outdoorsman, fisherman and golfer. Loving the outdoors, he loved nothing more than spending a summer’s day at his favourite place in Ross Ferry, appropriately named “Mull’s Point.” Wes was a dedicated member of Wilson United Church in Florence until its closure in 2015, being the lone male choir member. He loved nothing more than going to church every Sunday morning to enjoy fellowship with his friends and to sing his favourite hymns. As a member of the Bras d’Or Seniors and Pensioners club, he enjoyed playing darts and bingo weekly with all of his friends, and most importantly, his special friend, Barbara Pyke.
He was a talented self-taught musician, with the ability to play any instrument. He loved to play and sing along to his favourite tunes, and up until his passing, could be found watching old school Merle Haggard on “The YouTube” at any given time.
Wes had an immense love for his children. Never one to want time alone, he was fortunate to have a close circle of family and friends always willing to provide support. He was a man of great compassion, kindness and generosity; he was full of love, life and laughter. He had the most infectious belly laugh and wanted everyone to laugh along with him. Dad was our rock, our confidant, and biggest supporter. He had an innate ability to detect when one of his loved ones was feeling low and would do his best to lift our spirits.
He is survived by and will be immensely missed by his dear children; Cathy (Ian), Joanne, John (Janine), Sherry (Eddie) and Troy (Leanne); his grandchildren, who he always referred to as his “sweethearts”; Melissa (Rick), Griffin, Kiana (Kyle), Joy (Makyle) and Ty; great-grandchildren; Dean, Chanel and Atlas.
Also, surviving Wes are his spouse, Joyce Mulley, sister, Marion “Mamie” Johnstone, brothers, Wayne Mulley and John R. Mulley, and his long-time companion friend, Barbara Pyke.
In addition to his parents, Wesley was predeceased by his siblings, Minnie, Murdock, Leonard, Angus, William, Ina May, Susan and Madeline, and his sweet grandson, Connor Wesley Mulley.
Wes left this world the same way he lived, surrounded by everlasting love. Though he may have been a small man in stature, he had a presence that was larger than life. Wes could always be heard before he was seen, and we will miss hearing his stories.
Our family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Northside Homemaker Service Society, the wonderful nursing staff of 4A and the Palliative Care Nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for taking such compassionate care of him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Hospice Palliative Care Society at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of your choice.
A private service will be held at a later date. Memories and condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.fillmoreandwhitman.com
