Mary Anne Nichols, age 84 of Greenwood, SC, widow of George Nichols, passed away on March 1, 2020. A family service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 11:00 am at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home.
Born in Charlotte, NC, Mary Anne grew up the daughter of hard-working textile mill employees on the mill village in Paw Creek, Charlotte NC. She had many fond memories as a child growing up on the mill village and reminisced often of how life was simple and neighbors and friends cared for each other. She and her 4 other siblings, grandmother, and mother and father shared a small 4 room mill house. Her parents later purchased land and built a house on Hwy. 27 between Charlotte and Mt. Holly. They utilized the land to its fullest potential with a garden, barn, and many farm animals. Her childhood life revolved around school, chores, church and caring for her live-in grandmother. She graduated from West Mecklenburg High School and was honored as a high school beauty. After graduation, she attended the Comptometer School of Charlotte and went to work for Esso Corporation. She fell in love and married George Nichols, became a housewife and loving mother of 3 children. After settling in Greenwood, SC, Mary Anne returned to work at the Park Seed Company and retired from there after 21 years of dedicated employment. She was married to George Nichols for over 64 years and a proud mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mary Anne loved the Lord and served in the church as a choir member, Sunday school teacher, VBS, and many church events.
She is survived by her sister Sylvia Byrd (Thornburg), her children George Kelly Nichols (Glenda), Susan Simpson (Daryl), Mark Nichols (Ruby Whidby); her grandchildren Christopher Nichols (Stephanie) and Elizabeth Wilson (William); and her step-great grandson Finlay Helms and her great granddaughter Lula Mae Nichols. She is preceded in death by her parents Frank A. and Juanita P. (Payseur) Thornburg as well as her 3 other siblings Delores Dorsett (Thornburg), Frank A. Thornburg Jr. (Bud), and Gary Thornburg.
