Garry Lee Sweeney, father to Jackie, Caroline, Sarah and Will, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2020. Garry was born in Fort Worth to Everett and Johnnie Sweeney on February 23, 1952. The Sweeney family owned and operated Sweeney Publishing in downtown Ft. Worth. Garry was in the first graduating class from Southwest High School in Fort Worth and then attended The University of North Texas and earned a Bachelor’s degree. He then attended the University of Texas at Arlington, and completed his education soon after with an MBA.
He was married to his first wife, Patty Lindsay, and together they had a daughter, Jackie. Garry’s second marriage was to Karen Larsen. Together, they raised a gorgeous family that included Caroline, Sarah and Will.
Garry loved doing things with his children and grandchildren. He was there for them when they needed another set of hands to raise kids, hang curtains, cut the grass or have a burger with. He was devoted to their happiness and was always available to listen or offer guidance.
Professionally, Garry had an impressive career with the Federal Government and rose to the position of Regional Director of Fair Housing for the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Texas.
Garry was preceded in death by his father, Everett Sweeney, and his daughter, Jackie Sweeney Williams.
Garry is survived by: his mother Johnnie Sweeney; his brother Larry Sweeney; his children Caroline Sweeney, Sarah Sweeney-Hernandez, and Will Sweeney; and his grandchildren Christopher Vecchio, Ryder Williams, Kensie Hernandez, and Jack Hernandez.
Garry’s wish was for a celebration party instead of a funeral. A party in his honor will be planned as soon as current circumstances allow.
