after a battle with cancer. Cone was born at Emory University Hospital on
September 11, 1936, and was the son of the late Cone Morgan Alred Maddox, Jr.
and Dorothy Sims Maddox. He was a Buckhead native and attended E. Rivers
Elementary School and North Fulton High School. Cone then continued his
education at the University of Georgia. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega
fraternity where he served as president and was also vice president of the Inter
fraternity Council at Georgia. After graduating from Georgia, he started a
successful career in real estate with his father’s firm, Sharp-Boylston. He and his
brother Sims were real estate developers, and later Cone founded Dargan,
Whitington & Maddox, a commercial real estate company. Cone was a Member
of the Appraisal Institute (MAI), was a respected commercial real estate appraiser
and broker, and mentor and teacher for many. Cone loved being an adjunct
professor at Southern Polytechnic State University, having the opportunity to
expand mentoring and teaching. Cone was an avid reader, loved animals
(especially his dogs) and loved cars, being partial to his Studebaker Avantis. Cone
was a master griller known for smoked turkeys, a natural comic, a great
storyteller and known for his “Coneisms”! Most of all, Cone loved his family and
being a husband, father, grandfather and a NEW great grandfather! In addition to
his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Sims Maddox, and sister,
Dorothy Owens. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Karen Moreman Maddox;
children, Blanche “Dutchess” Pearson (Mike), Sharon Turner, Jonathan Taunton
(Susanne Luna), Virginia Johnson (Alan), Robert Taunton; grandchildren, Kristen
Turner Lopez (Joseph), AB Johnson, Chandler Johnson; and great granddaughter,
Margot Elizabeth Lopez. A memorial service will be at a later date at Second-
Ponce de Leon Baptist Church where he was a long-time member. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to Atlanta Lab Rescue,
