Salvacion Chan Barreto, 89, died March 9, 2020 after a long battle with dementia. Her funeral service will be held this Sunday, April 19, 2020, at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Fremont, California. Because of COVID19 and social distancing restrictions, the funeral will be limited to close family members only.
Salvacion aka Cion was born on March 10, 1930 in Santa, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. After her Filipina mother, Faustina Bragado Chan, passed away during WWII, her Chinese father, Tong Hay Chan, went back to China along with his 3 sons. Cion, Maria (her oldest sister), and Peping (youngest brother) were left behind in the Philippines.
At age 19, Cion married Baltazar Bielza Barreto. She joined him in the US on September 26, 1974. She worked at farms and nurseries - picking fruits & vegetables, cutting & pruning carnations and roses. She did this for a few years until her grandchildren needed a full-time babysitter. She enjoyed taking care of them and watching them grow to adulthood. She also loved smoking tobacco, which she hand rolled from tobacco leaves imported from the Philippines.
Her sons (2), daughters (2), grandchildren (8), and great grandchildren (7) will surely miss her!
