Rose was born on a farm in Faucett, Missouri to Claude Oliver Guinn and Minnie L Mauzey Guinn on September 19, 1931. She learned to cook and milk cows while living on a couple of different farms in the area. Rose attended a small country school along with her sister Claudine. When Rose was approximately 12, the family moved to 2935 Olive Street in Kansas City Missouri. While receiving an education and diploma at Central High School, she met Lewis Robert Henderson and fell in love. Lewis and Rose were married on her 20th birthday, September 19, 1951. The ceremony was held at Grand Avenue Temple, a Methodist church, located in downtown Kansas City.
Rose was a life-long learner who appreciated the beauty of the world. She began working at age 15 for Katz’s Drug Store. The job was popping and selling popcorn outside the store. She also worked as an aide for two years at St. Luke’s Hospital where she developed an understanding of life and death. A dislike of doctors was also developed while working this job! She loved being an aide at St. Luke’s enough to plan on joining the Navy to become a nurse. A dream she gave up for marriage and children.
Rose loved to work and was proud to have been employed at Nelly Don, various banks in many different positions including as an Officer at Commerce Bank, a wholesale jewelry company and as a school bus driver.
At various times, she volunteered with Laubach Literacy, St. Luke’s Methodist Church, Hickman Mills School District, and Meals on Wheels. She taught adult literacy and assisted students as a volunteer tutor. At St. Luke’s she was a Sunday School teacher/nursery worker.
