Dr. Paul G. Stephenson passed from his home in Houston, Texas to his eternal home in heaven on May 12, 2020. Paul was born on April 23, 1943 in Vidor Texas to Rev. Fred Allen and Lena Mae Stephenson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Stephenson of Houston, Texas; Dorothy Mae Wingate of Victoria,Texas, and a brother Rev. F.A. Stephenson of Mauriceville,Texas
Paul is survived by Dr. Charlotte Stephenson, ‘the love of his life for 55 years’ and two daughters: Amy Barwick and Melanie Robison. Amy’s husband Kevin and children Blake and J.P. Barwick live in McDonough, Georgia. Melanie’s husband Michael and children Katie and Anna Robison live in San Antonio, Texas.
Paul graduated from Huntsville High School and then from Texas A &M University at Commerce, with a degree in psychology. He held two Master’s degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate in Ministry from Texas Christian University. He secured advanced Clinical Pastoral Education at Southern Baptist Hospital, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Paul felt the call early in life to serve God and others by becoming an ordained Baptist minister. He
was pastor to several congregations including Dunn Memorial Baptist, McKinney, Texas, First Baptist
Church, New Paris, Ohio. and Parkway Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. In addition, he was interim
pastor to congregations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia. He particularly loved and devoted himself to hospital chaplaincy and grief ministry at St. Frances Hospital, Monroe, Louisiana, and Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, Scottsdale, Arizona. He served as Director of Counseling and Pastoral Care for the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, in Atlanta, Georgie, Director of Pastoral Care at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi and Director of Spiritual Care, Harris Health Systems, Houston, Texas. He was endorsed for chaplaincy by the Home MIssion Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Chaplaincy Division of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
Paul loved to preach, teach and counsel people, particularly those in crisis situations. He was very
giving and loving to his family, friends,work associates, and even people he did now know. He enjoyed traveling, particularly on mission trips. New Orleans was his favorite city because of the people and the food. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed being in nature.
Due to restrictions from the coronavirus, a funeral service for the immediate family is planned for
Friday, May 15 at The Settegast-Kopf Co. at Sugar Creek, Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, Texas. As restrictions are lifted In the near future, a Celebration of Life is anticipated with open visitation for all.
