Resident of Chula Vista passed away at the age of 95 years old. After the passing of his sister two years ago, Fred was the last surviving of his 13 siblings. Born in Mexicali, Baja California Mexico – Fred immigrated to the United State in 1953.
Starting from his younger years, Fred had a passion for cooking and worked as a chef in Hotel Coronado. He then moved on to work for Foodmaker Company at Oscars. He later became an assistant manager at Jack In The Box, and work at Daisy’s and Aunt Emma’s restaurants in Chula Vista.
Fred left his passion for cooking to work for Howards Furniture in National City, he began as the warehouse manager refurbishing factory furniture. Fred discovered a new passion when he was sent to Virginia to learn all of the different wood finishes. He became so good at this that he began to make personal wood furniture pieces for him and his wife. Fred was so crafty that his works of art nearly got him into trouble one day. He would make wood chucks for protection that he would take on his runs and bike trips. On one occasion a police officer spotted the wood chucks and stopped him, the officer said to him “Sir, are you aware that those are considered weapons?” Of course Fred knew, but he managed to talk his way out of trouble. This would foreshadow his future career as a salesmen before retiring later in life.
Fred always liked staying fit, he participated in several Senior 5km runs, the Arturo Barrios annual marathons, and leisure runs. If he wasn’t running, he would take his mountain bike and ride to Coronado or the Chula Vista Marina area. Despite a few scares of being chased by the local dogs, and the scrapes and falls that come with an active lifestyle – Fred was an avid athlete his whole life.
Fred was honored as a 20 year member of U.C. San Diego School of Medicine at the Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Along with his wife Myrna, he served as a member of the San Ysidro Urban Council.
Married for 66 wonderful years, he is survived by his loving wife Myrna, daughter Myrna, his grandchildren Omar and Yasmin, and his many nieces and nephews – who he all loved so much. Fred will be missed dearly by his many family and friends.
On behalf of Fred and his family, we would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses who cared for him during his time at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for their compassionate care and empathy. Fred can now finally, rest at peace.
