A lifelong resident of Cape Cod, Massachusetts died at Cape Cod Hospital after battling Covid-19. Born and raised in Harwich, she graduated from Harwich High School in 1955. “Ellie” later married George F. Simpson of Chatham and they settled into their home in West Hyannis Port, where she was a homemaker raising her five children.
After suddenly becoming a widow in 1980, Ellie attended Cape Cod Community College where she earned her nursing degree. She worked at Cape Cod Hospital, nursing facilities and private home assignments while she continued her education at Bridgewater State College receiving her B.S. in Psychology. She then shifted her focus to addiction, recovery and rehabilitation counselling which led to her achieving her Master’s Degree in Psychology and Counseling from Leslie College. She worked for many years at Gosnold Treatment Center. Most recently and until her retirement in 2010, she was a clinician at Cape Cod Human Services.
In addition to having a passion for helping people, Ellie was a woman that enjoyed the outdoors. She loved her garden and was gifted at making flower arrangements. She enjoyed her cabin in Maine, canoeing, kayaking and of course shell fishing here on Cape Cod. Ellie was a woman of faith and was always involved in her church, Faith Assembly of God. She was a wonderful mother, proud grandmother and great grandmother. She was devoted to her family and God.
Ellie was predeceased by her husband George F. Simpson, her daughter Arlene Simpson, her sister Edna Baldwin and brother Tom Barker. She is survived by her sons George F. “Skip” Simpson and wife Lisa of West Barnstable, Matthew H. Simpson of Wolcott, VT, her daughters Holly Spicer of Falmouth and Kristin Simpson of Centerville, as well as her sister Marybelle Small and brother Albert “Bert” Barker of Harwich. She had eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Due to the Covid-19 crisis, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. A private burial will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery. The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care and commitment from the nurses and staff at Cape Cod Hospital.
