Born on November 7th, 1955 in Bronxville, NY she lived with her family in Scarsdale, NY and moved for four years with her family to Upper Makefield, PA before they re-located to Bryn Mawr, PA in 1967.
She attended the Agnes Irwin school, class of ’73, before heading to Franklin College in Switzerland where she traveled throughout Europe, North Africa and Russia. She was a graduate of William Smith College, class of ’78.
Amy became a principal actor with the National Shakespeare Company and for seven years enjoyed touring with a company of actors delivering professional productions of Shakespeare around the country.
Amy was a gentle, loving soul who always looked for the good in people. Passionate in her preservation goals for Washington Crossing Park, she founded the Washington Crossing Historical Society and was also a founding member of the Crossing Legacy Foundation, which involved a 7-year battle to protect the historic zoning that preserved the area. She was a tireless advocate for preserving the rich history that Washington Crossing presented.
But, of all the roles she played, the one she cherished most was that of mother and homemaker to her two sons, Jamp and James, and faithful companion to her husband, Guy, whom she had known and loved since 5th grade.
Amy is survived by her husband, Guy Polhemus; children, Jamp and James Polhemus and sisters, Julia McLellan of New Orleans, LA and Hollis McLellan Unruh of Berkeley, CA.
She will be greatly missed but her spirit lives on in the Washington Crossing Historical Society. In light of these extraordinary times, a small virtual memorial service was held among family members on Sunday, May 24th. A formal service open to friends and family will be scheduled at a later date once the ability to gather safely has resumed.
