Col. & Mrs. Murray were former residents of Wind Crest and members of Concordia Lutheran Church. They moved to the ARC (Army Residence Community) in 2008.
Col. Murray served in Japan in 1946, came stateside in 1948 and served in Okinawa from 1970 to 1972. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Having flown over 6000 hours and 22 different aircrafts, he retired as a pilot with 31 years of service. His last flight was in 2017 with the Dream Flights crew at the age of 95.
While in the service, John played clarinet with the military band and played for many years afterwards. His love for music remained with him throughout his years. While at the ARC, he would get on his scooter with CD player and music collection in tow, he would provide music for Wednesday evening wine & dine with friends.
John was a faithful Christian, he attended Sunday services. He would also read scriptures and provide music on the Tuesday service, at the ARC church. He believed in God, Country and Family and is now on his journey home.
He leaves behind his grandson Craig Murray (wife Nicole) and great grandchildren Jackson, Samuel, Maxwell and Chloe. His son Jesse King Murray and grandchildren Jameson, Treasure Faye, Suzanne and Aaron; and great grandchildren. He is survived by nephew William Hirschfelder (wife Lisa), several nieces, nephews and other family members and friend Jose Pimentel. He had many friendships throughout his years and will be missed by all.
The visitation will be held on June 2, 2020 from 2pm to 5pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX. The interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
