Allyson Ricketts Hamm
My mother, Grace Ricketts, passed away very peacefully, yesterday morning (6/2/2020) joining my father. She leaves behind three daughters, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was a very special lady – a class act to say the least! She was a librarian at the Half Hollow Schools. She had high expectations for her daughters, which became our good fortune. We were never wanting for anything and had the best in everything. My parents were frugal, but firm believers in a good education. We all went to fine schools. My mother’s motto: If you have a question, look it up in the dictionary or the encyclopedia. (Today it’s Google!) My father was a private flight engineer for Mr. Whitney. I had a magical childhood growing up in Argyle Park and at the Babylon Yacht Club, my home away from home. My parents owned many sailboats throughout their lives. We went sailing every weekend to local destinations such as Clam Pond on the Spirit. Raceweek and 4th of July were extra special. Sailboats, sometimes 20 boats wide, would raft together at the hosting club. It took half an hour going from one end of the raft to the other between stopping to say your hellos to everyone on the boats. If you were in a rush you would just show a big smile and say hi! real fast and hope your legs would not get caught in the life lines! My parents had more friends than anyone I have ever known. Between the Skeffingtons, the Youngs, the Baxters, the Knoxes, the Moores, the Maxes, the Pattersons, the St. Johns, the Sidenburgs, the Orrs, the Pasches, the Howells, the DeMurias – the list goes on and on. I see myself as an incredible lucky person because my parents got so many things right. My Dad was charitable of his time with anyone who needed a hand fixing an engine or working on a project and Mom was always ready to sit and listen to anyone’s problems. Just by their example I learned how to be fair, giving to others, thankful for the things I have, and respectful of others. Mom and Dad Ya done good! You will both be missed!!
