Dorothy B. (Jackson) Edwards, age 96, passed away at her home in Portsmouth, RI, Tuesday, June 9, 2020. She was the wife of the late Edwin Branford Edwards, Jr. to whom she was married for 55 years before his passing in 1999.
Born in Fall River, MA a daughter of the late George A. and Esther A. (Holland) Jackson she was a longtime resident of Portsmouth.
A graduate of Rogers High School in Newport, Class of 1941 she went on to serve her community in several political positions. A Rhode Island State Representative from 1967 – 1981 she was the Vice President and then President of the Portsmouth Town Council and was the first woman elected to the Legislature from the town of Portsmouth. Prior to her passing, she was the oldest member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Tiverton.
She is survived by two daughters, Cindy J. Edwards and her husband Michael Limoges, Sr. and Debbi S. Pappas and her husband Steve; two sons, E. Branford Edwards III and Gary C. Edwards and his wife Janet; seven grandchildren, Nicholas Sanfilippo, Alison Sanfilippo, Kelli Leek, Keith Edwards, Rich Edwards, Gary C. Edwards, II and Kristin Crocitto; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Grace E. Pratt, Charles Jackson and George A. Jackson, Jr.
