Larry was born on October 8, 1947 in Abilene, TX to Leonard “Lee” and Evelyn Roseland. The second of four children, Larry was the only son. Lee served in the Air Force and Larry spent his childhood years living in different places around the US and abroad.
After graduating high school in Berlin, Larry moved back to Texas to attend college. He graduated from Texas Tech with a BS and MS in electrical engineering. His distinguished military career lasted almost 27 years beginning with his graduation and commissioning as a second lieutenant in 1972 and retiring in 1998. He had a wide variety of assignments including international programs director for the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS); a planner for national missile defense at the Defense Communications Agency; and a satellite operations manager. During his career he attended Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College in residence. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Longevity Service Medal. His assignments took him and his family to CA, Washington DC (twice), AL (twice), Seoul, S. Korea, and MA. Following his retirement and relocation to FL he worked as a consultant to businesses, assisting them in providing services to various USAF agencies. He was engaged in that endeavor at the time of his death, a period of 22 years.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Jo Anne of 43 years, daughter Marianne Roseland and husband Robert Smith of Boxford, MA; daughter Adrianne Fruecht, husband Josh and his grandchildren Olivia and Harrison of Winter Garden, FL. He is also survived by his three sisters Lynne and Bob Thompson of Fairfax, VA; Karen and Charlie Fawcett of Dallas, TX and Betty and Jack Moulder of San Antonio, TX.
Larry and Jo Anne had an avid love of golf and it was where you could find them most weekends (and weekdays as Larry began to work less the last several years.) They also had a love of travel and were fortunate enough to do some extensive travelling in the last 5 years that took them to places all over the world. Larry loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren who lived close by. He had a great love of science, especially physics and space, which seems to have passed to his grandson Harrison.
Larry had a great sense of humor and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed comedy, especially quirky skits and movies in the Monty Python and Mel Brooks catalogue. He had eclectic musical taste enjoying everything from Grieg to Kraftwerk to Rocky Horror. The consummate provider, Larry was always the one to make sure everyone else was taken care of. He provided a wonderful life for his wife and girls and they will forever be grateful for his guidance, love, and patience.
Larry was cremated and will be interred and memorialized at Arlington National Ceremony at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate blood if able or make a donation to the Sarcoma Foundation of America. Larry’s cancer was rare, which limited the treatment options and he required multiple blood transfusions throughout. We know he would want to help those who are going through the same situation.
