Dear Dad,

It's so hard to believe you have been gone for a year already. In a lot of ways this year just seems like one big blur. We all miss you dearly but have also seen so many signs that you are still with us! Thanks for those!! <3

We hope you are lying in the sun right now with your baby oil on trying to get a good tan just like in this photo of much happier times!  :)

I met Henry about 16 years ago. He was wearing a well-worn ballcap with USS NEW JERSEY, BB-62 on it. I made a comment about his being a fan of the NJ, and he told me he served aboard her during the Korean War. Being a Navy vet myself, we definitely started chatting and his memories of the days off Korea were still pretty active. Yes, the 16 inchers could not be ignored when they went off, but those 5 inchers were much more of a nuisance with their sharp cracking sound.  Henry remains the only real BB sailor I ever met and shared time and stories with.

May you always Rest In Peace.  I remember fondly going to Atlantic City with your mom, and my mom. I would have been 3 and you were 11. A fun time.

To my dear, sweet, caring Uncle Henry. It’s hard to imagine you are gone. But, I’ll never forget you. My hero as a child.  You were a child yourself when I came along. I always loved it when you were around. Dad did too.  What a treat when you and Aunt Shirley visited us or we visited you.  And I’ll never forget how handsome you looked in your crisp, white Navy uniform!  Have a milk shake up there, preferably from Brookwood Farms, and think of me. I’ll join you some day for one. We miss you so much. We couldn’t have asked for a more touching end to your life but it still doesn’t seem real. We’ve been doing our best to be strong like you would’ve wanted. We know you’re up there smiling down on us and we hope you send us some signs that you’re with us on our toughest days. We laugh at all of the times you’d tell us a story about an old friend and finish with, “....yeah, he’s gone”. No holiday will ever be the same without you. We love you more than you know! Rest easy with all of your family up there.

Pop, our lives have changed forever. I will forever miss your laugh, miss your smile, miss you telling me that you’re proud of me and miss you asking Donnie and I how to fix something. I remember how proud you were when my teacher told you that I could do anything that I put my mind to. You always reminded me of that day and I truly believe that helped me to get where I am. I will always cherish the time that I had with you. I promise to take care of grandmom so please do not worry! 

I love you and pray that you rest easy! Thank you for your service, your love, and for never giving up on me. 

Dear Dad, none of us really know how to get over your death. I hope time will help but right now it doesn’t feel like it will. You would be so proud of all of your kids and grandkids who are such taking great care of Mom. She’s doing her absolute best to continue on without you but she is having a lot of trouble too.  It really helped all of us so much that Mom could sit with and talk to you in your hospice room, and that Hen, Patrick, Missy and I could at least see you through the window those last 2 days. Mom was so strong, as she always is, when she was talking to you and holding your hand and we were all so glad that she was with you to the very end. We all missed you so much for those 4-5 weeks that you were away in rehab and the hospital and we couldn’t see you, but are comforted to know that you are now finally at peace.

We will continue to keep your memory alive in every way that we can, and we will continue to comfort Mom and take the best care of her just like you would have done!

I love you Dad, and I hope you’re having a great Father’s Day that includes some Natural Lights, crabs, and maybe some peach cake or even mince meat pie! Thank you for being such a wonderful father, and making it so hard to say goodbye to you.

Uncle Henry  and I would call each other to touch base and he would check in on my dad and I can still him say" Hey Kel...how's Ed doing?"  My mom loved him, Shirley and your family and we will miss him dearly. He always cared about others and went out of his way to visit dad at the beach after mom died. I really appreciated that. The Hartman siblings are all together now. Before mom passed she said.. the table was set and she was joining her family.
I believe Uncle Henry is at their table now too. May he rest in peace.

We miss you so much already, Pop. We will continue to reflect on our memories with you filled with crabs and jokes. I find comfort in knowing you are finally at peace with your brother, sister and parents.
