Cira M. Fernandez, a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many, passed away peacefully Monday June 22, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Cira reached the beautiful age of 90, having just celebrated her birthday June 8 and lived life to its fullest.
Cira was born in Havana, Cuba to the late Salustiano Hernandez and the late Florentina Dominguez Hernandez and was the only daughter of six children. She and her husband Ocilio left their native Cuba in 1980 to provide a better life for their family. It was a difficult journey, but one that would be best for them. They came in to the Florida Keys and eventually settled in New Iberia to begin their new life and raise their sons Carlos and Leonardo.
As a wife and mother Cira was the homemaker that lived her life for the care of her family. She also worked outside the home as a chemist with Cajun Sugar Coop for 37 years, retiring at the age of 87. Cira was always active, even into her senior years and loved keeping busy. She was known for her delicious Cuban food and shared meals with her family and friends, and loved listening to Cuban and Spanish music. Some of her other pastimes were taking care of her rose bushes and playing dominos, and you couldn’t beat her on your best day. Cira will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her sons, Carlos A. Fernandez and Leonardo L. Fernandez and wife Annette; her grandson whom she adored, Dylan J. Fernandez; her brothers, Miguel Hernandez and Salustiano Hernandez; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ocilio Fernandez; and her brothers, Gonzalo, Pedro and Ubaldo Hernandez.
In keeping with her wishes, private services were held and she was laid to rest with her husband at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Patoutville.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Heart of Hospice, especially Rachel Spoon, for their care and compassion shown during this time.
