Her favorite place in whole world, the beach condominium in Destin Florida, was where she sustained
The fall that began her final journey. The family will always be comforted in knowing she was able to
Gaze out over the sand, hear the crashing waves and feel the gentle breeze one last time.
A Birmingham native, she was born on August 3, 1928. Jean studied piano under Glen Nichols and was an accomplished pianist when she graduated from Phillips High School in January 1947.
Jean married the “love of her life” Richard L. Jones (D) in August the same year. Their married life journey started just off campus at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa while “Red”, as he was known to his family and friends, finished his law degree. Their life journey included living in Aliceville, Alabama, Red’s hometown, Bush Hills section of Birmingham and Hueytown Alabama before settling in Mountain Brook, Alabama in the late 1950’s. By this time, Jean and Red had three children and both of Jean’s parents under the same roof. Jean’s quiet strength, resolve and resilience blossomed and grew to iron-clad proportions as she guided her family through the laughter, tears, joys and sadness that comes with everyday life.
An avid traveler, she often accompanied Red on business trips, as well as the many conferences they attended while Red was a member of The Birmingham Bar, The Alabama Bar and The American Bar Associations. They always looked forward to The Uniform State Law Associations’ conference every year to catch up with many old friends. Jean was fortunate to visit most of the United States as well as numerous countries overseas.
Jean was an integral part of Shades Valley Presbyterian Church in Mountain Brook, Alabama. She enjoyed expressing her love of music by playing in the handbell choir, Covenant Ringers, for many years. A faithful and steadfast member for over 60 years, her church family was an essential part of her life. She leaves behind many beloved friends.
She was long time member of Shades Mountain Music Club, Savantes Literary Club and Spirituality Group bible study.
Unwavering in her devotion to her faith and her family, she was always loving and caring for each one of us in her own unique way. Her passing leaves an emptiness in our hearts that will never be filled.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to her care giver for over 5 years, Ms Julene Miller. Julene’s patient, loving, care and undying devotion to Jean will never be forgotten.
Jean is preceded in death by her father, Dr. George W. Leslie, her mother, Effie Randolph, her sister Elizabeth L. Booker (Edmund W.) D and her beloved husband, Ret .Justice Richard L. Jones.
