The family relocated to Springville Oregon when Jane was 2. Growing up during the Great Depression, Jane and her family learned to be frugal and growing their own food to survive. A highlight for the children was trading eggs for candy with the neighborhood store. Jane attended Jefferson High School but dropped out like many students did at the time to go to work to help support their family. She attended Beauty School working at various beauty shops until opening her own salon in her home. Jane enjoyed fixing people’s hair.
Jane met Bill Roots through her brother Norm and was intrigued by his good looks. They were inseparable from the day they met and had great chemistry together. As a couple, they enjoyed Vegas because they loved the weather there, and traveling to visit Bill’s Canadian relatives and exploring the Oregon coast. Jane and Bill built a tiki bar in their basement to entertain and play cards and have Hawaiian parties.
They welcomed two sons: Jeffrey and Victor and took them on trips to Disneyland the beach and locally, Jantzen Beach Amusement Park.
She loved all genres of music from the Big Band era, and her favorite song was ‘Hey Jude’ from the Beatles. She really liked the music of Andy William. However, her two greatest hobbies and passions in life were gardening and ceramics. Every inch of her yard was filled with flowers and she did not have a favorite; she loved them all. Her yard was perfectly manicured, all by her own hands. She enjoyed teaching her granddaughters to make ceramics, and Jane won several blue ribbons for her work at local ceramic shows. Her home was elaborately decorated for Halloween, Easter and Christmas and then, she got fascinated with collecting nutcrackers too and got her family into collecting them.
Jane was a woman of faith rooted in Catholicism and prayed often for people when they were in need. She had a vast spoon collection from all over the world, and loved lottery scratch it tickets. She liked soap operas and watching Perry Mason and Murder She Wrote. Her deviled eggs were simply the best. And her family loved her Ukranian Borscht.
Later in life, when she had limited mobility, she loved watching the hummingbirds come to the feeder out her window. And every day even till the end, she diligently worked on her jigsaw puzzles on the side of her bed.
