Syl Fabiny passed away on June 27, 2020, in Allen, TX at the age of 85. He and his recently deceased wife of 60 years (Irene) lived in Oklahoma City until they moved to a care facility in Allen, TX last May to be near their youngest child.
The older of two children, Syl was the son of Matthew and Veronica Fabiny. He grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, on the Eastside. His father passed away when he was 14 years old. He had fond memories of spending summers helping his Aunt run her store in Uniontown, PA where his mother had extended family in the dairy business.
He served in the Army after high school and was stationed in Germany. Married in 1960, Syl and Irene raised three children in the Youngstown area. They moved the family, kids, and dog to Oklahoma City in 1979 when he was transferred to the then-new General Motors plant.
Hard-working, he was always busy doing something, but he was never too busy for his family. He was kind and easy-going with an understated sense of humor. He spent the last six years as a dedicated, devoted caregiver to his wife.
He was a certified master gardener, but that title is inadequate in describing his amazing talents in landscaping. Friends and neighbors will miss him every summer for the many tomatoes he gave away.
He could install, fix, or remodel just about anything. He was always happy to help others with their projects. His kids grew up hearing him yell “I need a helper!” from somewhere in the house. In his empty nester years, he became a skilled woodworker, making furniture and decor in his garage shop.
He is survived by three children and their spouses (Annette and husband Randy, Rusty (aka Larry) and wife Kelly, and Mark and wife Holly), as well as four grandchildren (Analiese, Jared, Tris and Zane). Syl’s sister, Dorothy, preceded him.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to his neighbors in OKC for their kindness, care and generosity. Because of them, Syl and Irene enjoyed their final years in their own home, where they most wanted to live.
