Tom Johnston was born in Castle Rock to Ross and Ema Watts Johnston and grew up on the family farm near Palmer Lake. He graduated from Douglas County High School where he was a proud member of the 1943 state championship basketball team. After attending Colorado A&M College (now Colorado State University), Tom enlisted in the Army Air Corps and then completed the second Officer’s Training Course conducted by the newly formed US. Air Force. He specialized in aircraft ordinance and maintenance in a 20 year career that included tours in Alaska and Japan. Tom lived for 47 years in Littleton and Grand Lake while he pursued various occupations and then spent his last years in Castle Rock. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 71 years, Mary Lee Rainey Johnston; parents; brother, Wilbert; sister, Marjorie McWilliams; and son Ron (Colonel, USAF). Tom is survived by his son, Dan (Colonel, U.S. Army); daughter Karen; son, Gary; eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Tom and Mary Lee will be interred in a private ceremony at Fort Logan National Cemetery later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to New Hope Presbyterian Church in Castle Rock are encouraged.
