She was born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph Simmons and the late Rose (Lewis Perry) Rose. Her family moved to New York City when she was a child, where she attended local schools and earned her bachelor’s degree from Hunter College in New York City. She would later move to San Jose, California where she lived for over 35 years before returning to Fairhaven in 1996.
Mrs. Medeiros was employed as an elementary school teacher for over 40 years, in both catholic and public schools in Union City (CA), San Leandro (CA), San Jose (CA), Fairhaven and Fall River until her retirement over 20 years ago.
She will be remembered for her lovely singing voice. Music always filled the household with rehearsals and choosing of song material in the Portuguese language. She performed with her husband in the Medeiros Brothers guitar group live at Portuguese functions and on her husband’s Portuguese television program. Other interests include her immense love for movies and dance from the golden era. She also loved to dance the rumba and could tell you many facts about the movie stars of that time.
She is survived by her son Aires J. Medeiros of Fairhaven, a daughter Elizabeth Medeiros Hogue of Norfolk, VA and grandson Joshua Hogue. Mrs. Medeiros was the mother of the late Priscilla Medeiros.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Friday July 17, 2020 at 10:30am in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. Visiting hours will be Friday from 10 to 10:30am prior to her service.
