Jose (John) J. Aldecoa passed away on July 19, 2020. John honorably served in the US Airforce during Vietnam. In a life highlighted by work as a Safe installer and pilot instructor, John was most widely known as an active member of The American Legion since 1972, serving in a multitude of elected and appointed positions at the Post, department and national levels. He tirelessly promoted the principles and goals of The American Legion at all levels including the National Legislative Council for 20 years and the National Convention Commission and Advisory Board from 2007 to 2019 whereupon he was recently named Vice Chairman.
John served until retirement as the Adjutant, (Chief Operating Officer) of the 50,000 members of The American Legion of Arizona. He also served on the Arizona Boys State Board of Directors, Counselor and Administrator of this annual program of The American Legion, working with more than 300 students annually on the NAU campus. John served as a state commander for The American Legion honor society officially known as a Grande Chef de Gare of The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses, dedicated to support of student nursing and the treatment of leprosy.
John has been recognized by other Veterans and Veterans organizations and was inducted into the Arizona Veteran’s Hall of Fame. Others of his passions were his work/membership with the Arizona Boys and Girls Club.
John is survived by his loving wife Sylvia. Sons, John Aldecoa (Vanessa) and David Aldecoa (Diana), daughters, Michelle Christy and Evelyn Perez, Sister Hilda Pesqueira (Fernando), 12 grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his father, Carlos Miguel and mother Artemisa, brother Mike and sister Rosa.
John’s life will be celebrated at a handful of locations/times in order to manage during these days of misery. The service that will be streamed-live on social media can be found Friday, August 7, 2020 at 10:00 AM.
