Walter T. Weaver III died on Friday, July 24, 2020 at his home in Gun Barrel City (GBC), TX after bravely taking cancer head on. Walter “Walt” Weaver lived his life by the Scout motto “Be Prepared”. Robert Baden-Powell wrote that to Be Prepared means “you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty.” And prepared Walt was until the end. If there was a list to be made, he made it. A course, he plotted. Flashlight, pocket-knife, water bottle, compass, packed and ready to go.
Walt was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He joined scout troop 76 and worked his way to Eagle Scout. He played football at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, PA. He studied Humanities at Salem College, Salem, WV, and became president of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega whose motto is “Be a leader. Be a friend. Be of service.” He had a heart for service to country and community. After being drafted, Walt became a drill sergeant in the U.S. Army. He volunteered with local scout troops wherever he was stationed. Walt joined the Boy Scouts of America and served professionally for thirty four years, starting his career in the Northeast, moving from one scout council to another and eventually moving his family to Texas to work in the national office as the director of finance support.
After retirement, Walt and his wife Suzy moved from the DFW area to Cedar Creek Lake, GBC. They connected with the community immediately by volunteering, fundraising, and hosting epic derby parties. Walt made a mighty mint julep. Together they filled their passports by visiting places like the pyramids in Egypt, the Great Wall of China, and cruising the rivers and seas of the world, always making friends along the way. No matter where in the world they traveled, they always found a way to watch their beloved Dallas Cowboys.
In his last weeks with family and friends, Walt reminisced about how fortunate he was to have made the friends he did and proud of his long list of life experiences (each with its own unique story). In charge until the end, in true drill sergeant mode, he gave his orders, and with help from family and friends, Walt was able to cross off items on his list and felt prepared to leave his family in good standing.
Walt is survived by his wife Suzy and her children Andy, wife Katy Ross and daughter Phoebe (Georgetown, TX), Elizabeth and husband Woody Brewer, and their children Robert and Charlotte (Austin, TX) and Walt’s daughters Penny Weaver (Chicago, IL) and Pam Weaver (Evanston, IL) and loyal dog, Sergeant. He will reunite with his mother and father Elizabeth (Libby) and Walter (Wally) T. Weaver Jr. Walt was the older brother to Elaine Weaver (Shrewsbury, PA) and Dale Garrison (Malvern, PA).
He loved his scouting family as he did his own. We are all at peace with his passing. The family would like to thank Caring Hearts Hospice for their care and our friends and family for their support.
